How take-home pay in Japan is calculated
Japanese payroll deducts social insurance — health, pension and employment — around 14.69% of gross for 2026: pension 9.15%, health 4.925% (Tokyo kyokai kenpo), employment insurance 0.5%, and the new child-care support levy of 0.115% that started in April 2026. National income tax then applies on brackets from 5% to 45% after the employment-income and basic deductions.
Resident tax of about 10% is charged on the prior year's income, which is the most common source of confusion. This simplified model applies both. Estimate, not tax advice.
