How motorrijtuigenbelasting in Netherlands is calculated

The MRB is the Netherlands' recurring road tax, billed quarterly and driven mainly by the car's weight and fuel type. Diesel cars pay several times the petrol rate for the same weight; electric cars get a reduced rate.

Provinces add their own surcharge (opcenten) on top, so the exact amount varies by where the car is registered. Since 1 July 2026 the weight used is the massa rijklaar, 100 kg more than the old massa ledig voertuig. The calculator takes weight and fuel and returns an illustrative annual figure. Estimate, not tax advice.

Worked example

C1 petrol 1,100 kg
Gewicht (kg)1100
Brandstof (0 benzine, 1 diesel, 2 elektrisch)0
Tarief per 100 kg 24
Basis MRB 264
MRB per jaar 264

Frequently asked questions

How much MRB for a 1,100 kg petrol car?

A light petrol car around 1,100 kg pays a modest annual MRB; a diesel of the same weight pays several times more. Enter your weight and fuel to see the figure.

Do electric cars pay MRB?

Yes. In 2026 electric and hydrogen cars pay 70% of the petrol rate for their weight - a 30% discount that runs through 2028, falls to 25% in 2029 and ends in 2030.

Why does the province matter?

Each province adds opcenten (a surcharge) to the national MRB base, so identical cars can pay different totals depending on registration province.
