How car tax in Germany is calculated
For a car first registered from 1 July 2009, Germany's annual Kfz-Steuer has two parts. The displacement part charges 2.00 EUR per started 100 cm³ for a petrol engine, or 9.50 EUR for a diesel — so a 1,398 cm³ petrol counts as 14 units.
The CO₂ part applies only above 95 g/km, and it is stepped: 2.00 EUR per gram from 96-115, rising through 2.20, 2.50, 2.90 and 3.40 to 4.00 EUR per gram above 195. Each band charges only the grams that fall inside it.
Add the two parts for the annual tax. Battery-electric cars registered in time are exempt for several years. The calculator exposes displacement, CO₂ and fuel type because all three move the result. Estimate, not tax advice.

Battery-electric cars first registered by the cut-off date are exempt for a fixed period. This model computes the tax for combustion engines; an EV toggle is a planned addition.
