How Carte grise (registration certificate) in France is calculated

Unlike most of Europe, France levies no recurring annual tax on privately owned cars. The cost drivers search for is the carte grise (registration certificate), paid once when a vehicle changes hands.

Its main component is a regional tax: the number of fiscal horsepower (chevaux fiscaux) times a per-CV rate set by each region, plus small fixed management and delivery fees. Pick your region from the dropdown — in 2026 the rate runs from 43.00 EUR/CV in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes to 68.95 in Île-de-France, which adds a 14 EUR levy for Île-de-France Mobilités. High-emitting new cars also pay a one-off CO2 malus at purchase. Estimate, not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a carte grise cost for a 5 CV car?

It depends on your region. In Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (43.00 EUR/CV) a 5 CV car costs about 215 EUR of regional tax plus fixed fees; in Île-de-France (68.95 EUR/CV) the same car costs about 345 EUR. Pick your region in the calculator.

Does France have an annual car tax?

No. Private cars pay no recurring ownership tax; the costs are the one-time carte grise and, for high-emitting cars, the CO2 malus at purchase.

What is a cheval fiscal?

The fiscal horsepower (CV) is an administrative rating derived from engine power and CO2. The carte grise regional tax is that number times the regional per-CV rate.
