Estonia car tax calculator (2026)

Estonia's new car tax is an annual charge plus a one-time registration tax, both built from a base amount, the CO₂ above 117 g/km and the mass above 2,000 kg.

Worked example: with CO₂ emissions of 150, this model computes First-year total of 614 EUR. See the full breakdown.

How car tax in Estonia is calculated

Estonia introduced a motor-vehicle tax in 2025, which makes it a topical, high-interest search. The annual tax is a 50 EUR base plus 3 EUR for every gram of CO₂ above 117 g/km and 0.20 EUR for every kilogram of mass above 2,000 kg.

A one-time registration tax works the same way from a 300 EUR base plus 5 EUR per gram of CO₂ above 117 g/km. The calculator shows both, plus the first-year total.

Rates here are illustrative of the 2025 structure and belong in the model's constants for easy refresh against the official EMTA calculator. Not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Estonia's car tax for 150 g/km and 1,800 kg?

The annual tax is the 50 EUR base plus 3 EUR for each of the 33 grams above 117 g/km — about 149 EUR — while the mass is below the 2,000 kg threshold, so it adds nothing.

What is the difference between the annual and registration tax?

The registration tax is a one-time charge paid when the car enters the register; the annual tax recurs each year. Both are built from CO₂ and mass over the same thresholds.

Do electric cars pay the new Estonian car tax?

EVs pay a mass-based component but no CO₂ part. This model computes the CO₂-and-mass formula; a dedicated EV mode is a planned addition.
