Dutch holiday entitlement calculator (vakantie-uren)

Article 7:634 lid 1 of the Burgerlijk Wetboek gives at least four times the agreed weekly working time — in hours, not days. A 40-hour week earns 160 hours, which is 20 eight-hour days; a 36-hour week over four days earns 144 hours, which is 16 nine-hour days. Both are four weeks.

How vakantie-uren in Netherlands is calculated

*"aanspraak op vakantie van ten minste vier maal de overeengekomen arbeidsduur per week of, als de overeengekomen arbeidsduur in uren per jaar is uitgedrukt, van ten minste een overeenkomstige tijd."* The Netherlands is the only country in this family whose statutory entitlement is a number of **hours**. The familiar "20 vakantiedagen" is nowhere in the article — it is what 4 × 40 hours happens to come to when a day is eight hours long.

**Which is why the day count misleads anyone not on a 5 × 8 week.** Thirty-six hours over four nine-hour days is 144 vakantie-uren, and 144 ÷ 9 is **16 days**. Sixteen is not less leave than twenty; it is the same four weeks, measured in longer days. A calculator that reports "20 days" to everyone has quietly changed the unit, and an employer tracking hours against a day-based expectation is the usual way this goes wrong.

**Part of a year is proportional, and the statute says so.** Lid 2: leave for part of a year is *"een evenredig gedeelte"* of the full-year entitlement — so unlike Austria, the Netherlands does pro-rate. Lid 3 lets a collective agreement compute it in whole months for someone leaving after at least a month, which this page does not model. Most Dutch contracts also grant **bovenwettelijke** vakantie-uren on top of this minimum, and those expire on different terms from the statutory ones.

Frequently asked questions

Hoeveel vakantiedagen heb ik wettelijk recht op?

Artikel 7:634 BW geeft ten minste vier maal de overeengekomen arbeidsduur per week, uitgedrukt in uren. Bij 40 uur per week zijn dat 160 vakantie-uren, oftewel 20 dagen van acht uur.

Why is my entitlement 16 days and not 20?

Because the statute is in hours. On 36 hours over four days you earn 144 hours, and a day of yours is nine hours long — 144 ÷ 9 is 16. That is the same four weeks as someone on 20 eight-hour days.

Does working part-time reduce my leave?

Proportionally in hours, yes — four times a smaller weekly figure is a smaller number of hours. In weeks, no: everyone gets four weeks of their own working time.

What about bovenwettelijke vakantiedagen?

Those are contractual, on top of the statutory minimum this page computes, and they expire under different rules. Check your contract or CAO for them.
