Latvian holiday entitlement calculator (ikgadējais atvaļinājums)

Article 149 of the Darba likums gives every employee at least four calendar weeks of paid annual leave, not counting public holidays — so a public holiday falling inside the leave does not consume a day of it. On a five-day week that is 20 working days plus any holidays that fall in the period.

With Days you work per week of 5, this model computes Days Entitled of 20. See the full working.

How ikgadējais atvaļinājums in Latvia is calculated

*"Šāds atvaļinājums nedrīkst būt īsāks par četrām kalendāra nedēļām, neskaitot svētku dienas."* Two rules in one sentence, and the second is the one calculators drop. The unit is **calendar** weeks — four of your own working weeks, so 20 days on a five-day week — and public holidays are **expressly not counted**, so one falling inside your leave gives you a day back rather than using one up.

**That clause is worth real money and it is easy to miss.** Latvia has around a dozen public holidays, so a four-week block taken over Easter or in late June will usually catch one or two. A page that reported a flat twenty days would short those readers by exactly the number of holidays they happened to book around — which is why this calculator asks.

**Article 149 states a minimum and no proportional rule of any kind.** No monthly accrual, no pro-rata for a part year, no service bands — which is why this page asks for no dates. There is nothing in the article to apply them to, and supplying a fraction would be putting words into the statute.

**Two rules it does state and this page does not compute.** Anyone under 18 gets *"vienu mēnesi ilgu ikgadējo apmaksato atvaļinājumu"* — a full month rather than four weeks — and because a calendar month has no fixed number of working days the page declines to put a figure on it. And art. 151 provides papildatvaļinājums, additional leave for employees with children and for hazardous work, whose length is set by collective agreement or contract rather than by the article.

Frequently asked questions

Do public holidays count against my leave?

No. Article 149 says the four calendar weeks are counted "neskaitot svētku dienas" — not counting public holidays — so each one falling inside your leave adds a day back.

Is the leave pro-rated if I worked part of the year?

Article 149 does not say. It states a minimum and no proportional rule at all, so this page reports the statutory minimum and does not invent a fraction. Your contract or collective agreement may set one.

What about employees under 18?

Article 149 gives them a full calendar month rather than four weeks. A calendar month has no fixed number of working days, so this page states the rule rather than computing a figure for it.
