Finnish holiday entitlement calculator (vuosiloma)

Vuosilomalaki 5 § accrues 2,5 arkipäivää for every full qualifying month, or 2 if your employment has lasted under a year, and rounds a part day up. Twelve months is 30 arkipäivää — but 4 § counts Saturdays as arkipäivät, so those 30 days are five weeks, which is 25 working days on an ordinary five-day week.

How vuosiloma in Finland is calculated

*"Työntekijällä on oikeus saada lomaa kaksi ja puoli arkipäivää kultakin täydeltä lomanmääräytymiskuukaudelta."* Twelve of those is **30**, the largest annual-leave figure published anywhere in Europe — more than the UK’s 28, more than Austria’s 30 Werktage reads like, and well over Germany’s 24. Finland is not, however, the most generous country in Europe, and the reason is the unit.

**4 § 3) defines an arkipäivä as any weekday other than Sunday and seven named holidays.** Saturdays count. So the statutory year of 30 arkipäivää is five six-day weeks, and on an ordinary five-day week that is **25 working days** — the same as Sweden, and four fewer than the raw numbers suggest. Any page that compares Finland’s 30 with the UK’s 28 without saying this is comparing two different things.

**5 § has one threshold, not a band table.** If your employment has run unbroken for less than a year by the end of the leave year, the rate is 2 arkipäivää a month rather than 2,5 — 24 a year, or 20 working days. There is no further step for longer service: a thirty-year employee and a two-year employee accrue at the same rate.

**And the statute sets its own rounding, upward.** *"Loman pituutta laskettaessa päivän osa pyöristetään täyteen lomapäivään."* Seven qualifying months is 17,5 and therefore **18** arkipäivää. Note where it applies: to the length in arkipäivää, which is what 5 § is computing — so this calculator rounds before converting into your week, not after.

**A month only counts if it qualifies.** 6 § asks for at least 14 työssäolopäivää in the calendar month — or at least 35 työtuntia, for people whose pattern never reaches 14 days in any month at all. A month of light work is not a month of accrual, which is why this page asks for qualifying months rather than months employed.

Frequently asked questions

Kuinka paljon vuosilomaa kertyy kuukaudessa?

Kaksi ja puoli arkipäivää täydeltä lomanmääräytymiskuukaudelta, tai kaksi arkipäivää jos työsuhde on kestänyt alle vuoden — vuosilomalain 5 §.

Is Finland’s 30 days really more than the UK’s 28?

No. Finland counts in arkipäivät, which include Saturdays, so 30 of them is five weeks or 25 working days on a five-day week. The UK’s 28 are the worker’s own working days, so they are 28 working days. The smaller published number is the larger entitlement.

Does more than a year of service earn more leave?

Only the first year matters. 5 § raises the rate from 2 to 2,5 arkipäivää a month once employment has run unbroken for a year, and sets no further step after that.
