How take-home pay in United Kingdom is calculated

For the 2025-26 tax year (rest of the UK), everyone starts with a 12,570 GBP personal allowance — the slice of income taxed at 0%. Above 100,000 GBP that allowance tapers away by 1 GBP for every 2 GBP of income, disappearing entirely by 125,140 GBP.

Income above the allowance is taxed at 20% up to the basic-rate limit, 40% in the higher band, and 45% at the top. Employee National Insurance is charged separately on gross earnings: 8% between the primary threshold and the upper earnings limit, then 2% above it.

A workplace pension contribution reduces both your taxable income and your take-home, so the calculator exposes it as a percentage. Scotland runs its own income-tax bands; this page models the rest-of-UK rates. Estimates only — not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

How much is take-home pay on £35,000 in the UK?

On a 35,000 GBP salary the personal allowance covers the first 12,570 GBP, income tax at 20% applies to the remaining 22,430 GBP, and employee National Insurance is charged at 8% between the thresholds. The calculator shows the exact monthly and annual net.

What is the £100,000 personal allowance trap?

Above 100,000 GBP your personal allowance falls by 1 GBP for every 2 GBP earned, which pushes the effective marginal rate on that band to 60%. Enter a salary above 100,000 GBP to watch the allowance shrink.

Does this include Scottish income tax?

No — this page uses the rest-of-UK bands. Scotland has its own five-band scale with different thresholds; a Scottish variant is a planned addition.
