How útborguð laun in Iceland is calculated
Iceland withholds one combined tax, **staðgreiðsla**, covering both state income tax and the municipal tax (útsvar). For 2026 it is **31.49%** on monthly income up to 498,122 kr, **37.99%** up to 1,398,450 kr and **46.29%** above — applied band by band, not to the whole salary.
The tax is then reduced by the **personal tax credit** (persónuafsláttur), 72,492 kr a month or 869,898 kr a year. Because it is a credit against tax rather than an allowance against income, it is worth the same to everyone — and at about 230,000 kr a month it cancels the tax entirely.
Before any of that, the **4% pension premium** comes off the tax base, and so does up to 4% more if you save in a supplementary pension (séreign) — which is why séreign is close to universal. The percentages use the average útsvar; your own municipality’s rate settles the final figure at assessment. Estimate, not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions
What is the take-home pay on 700,000 kr a month in Iceland?
After the 4% pension premium (28,000 kr), staðgreiðsla on 672,000 kr is 222,915 kr before the credit and 150,423 kr after it, leaving 521,577 kr a month.
What are the tax brackets in Iceland in 2026?
31.49% on monthly income up to 498,122 kr, 37.99% from 498,123 to 1,398,450 kr, and 46.29% above that. The personal tax credit is 72,492 kr a month.
Does supplementary pension (séreign) reduce my tax?
Yes. Up to 4% of salary paid into a supplementary pension is deducted from the tax base, on top of the mandatory 4% premium.
Why is the rate 31.49% and not lower?
Because staðgreiðsla combines state income tax with the municipal tax (útsvar). The published rates use the average útsvar, so your own municipality can move the final figure slightly at assessment.
