Sweden self-employed net income calculator (enskild firma)

Your net income from a Swedish enskild firma is the surplus minus a 25% standard deduction, then egenavgifter at 28.97% and municipal tax on what remains, plus 20% state tax above the threshold.

Worked example: with Annual surplus before contributions of 600,000, this model computes Net income / year 323,790. See the full breakdown.

How enskild firma in Sweden is calculated

The schablonavdrag is the mechanism that makes Swedish self-employment arithmetic counter-intuitive. You deduct a standard 25% of the surplus to cover egenavgifter you have not yet paid, and both the contributions and the income tax are then computed on what is left — so adding 28.97% and a 32% municipal rate together badly overstates the real burden.

Where you live then moves the answer by more than most tax decisions do. Municipal tax is the dominant charge for most sole traders and runs roughly from 29% to 35% depending on kommun, a spread worth tens of thousands of kronor a year on a normal income. The 20% state tax only appears above the threshold, which most sole traders never reach.

Worked example

600,000 SEK surplus — a typical full-time sole trader
Annual surplus before contributions (SEK)600000
Schablonavdrag 150000
Taxable Income 450000
Egenavgifter (28.97%) 130365
Municipal tax 145845
State tax (20%) 0
Net income / year 323790

Frequently asked questions

How much are egenavgifter in Sweden?

28.97% for a sole trader under 65, charged on the surplus after the 25% standard deduction. On a 600,000 SEK surplus that is about 130,365 SEK.

What is the schablonavdrag?

A standard 25% deduction from the surplus that covers the egenavgifter you have not yet paid. Both the contributions and the income tax are computed on the figure after it.

Why does the municipality matter so much?

Municipal tax is the largest single charge for most sole traders and varies from roughly 29% to 35% by kommun. This model uses the income-weighted national average, so your real figure will differ.
