How rego & ruc in New Zealand is calculated
New Zealand has no CO2 car tax. Petrol cars pay an annual licence (rego); diesel and electric vehicles pay Road User Charges (RUC) instead, at 76 NZD per 1,000 km.
RUC is the high-volume half of the query because it scales with distance driven. Road user charges for light electric vehicles began on 1 July 2026, ending their exemption, and plug-in hybrids pay half the rate at 38 NZD per 1,000 km.
