# Valem — live sandbox > This is the hosted Valem sandbox: describe a domain in plain language, watch an LLM generate a > ModelSpec, then type into it and see derivations, constraints, and effects recompute live. Valem > is a deterministic, reactive computation runtime for AI-generated structured data models — a > spreadsheet-like computation core for JSON-based agent systems, addressed by JSON Path and > expressed in JSONata. Open source (Apache-2.0), Java 21. You give Valem a **ModelSpec** — a JSON document naming a domain's fields (`schema`), the JSONata formulas that derive values from them (`derivations`), the invariants that must always hold (`constraints`), optional side effects (`effects`), and a `viewDefinition` that renders it as a UI. Write only base fields; Valem recomputes every dependent value in dependency order and enforces every constraint before the change commits. Because the pure core does no I/O, runs are deterministic and replayable. Use it here (no install), or run it yourself and drive it from an agent over MCP. ## This sandbox - [Open the sandbox](https://valem.run/): describe a model in a sentence and interact with it live. - [What to do in it](https://valem.run/docs/getting-started/sandbox.html): a short tour of the generate → interact loop. ## Learn and build - [Documentation](https://valem.run/docs/): the full guide, reference, and deployment docs. - [llms.txt (documentation site)](https://valem.run/docs/llms.txt): the curated index for assistants — start there for the complete map. - [What is Valem?](https://valem.run/docs/getting-started/what-is-valem.html): the problem it solves and how the causes-only model closes it. - [Valem vs alternatives](https://valem.run/docs/getting-started/compared.html): Valem vs letting the LLM compute, a code interpreter, a rules engine, a form library, and a spreadsheet as a backend. - [Copy-paste spec examples](https://valem.run/docs/reference/copy-paste-specs.html): minimal, self-contained ModelSpecs with the exact command to create and run each. - [Model spec format](https://valem.run/docs/reference/model-spec-format.html): the authoritative field-by-field reference. ## Connect an AI agent (MCP) - [Running the MCP server](https://valem.run/docs/deployment/mcp-server.html): install/run `valem-mcp`; register it with Claude Code or Claude Desktop; find it in MCP directories. - [MCP tools & resources](https://valem.run/docs/reference/mcp-tools.html): every tool (`create_model`, `mutate`, `get_state`, `explain`, `validate_spec`, `test_spec`, `dry_run`, …) and its arguments. - [Connect your agent](https://valem.run/docs/getting-started/connect-your-agent.html): the paired-browser loop — an agent drives a model while you watch it react in this sandbox. ## For agents: compute an answer - [Calculators MCP server](https://valem.run/mcp/calculators): stateless, no pairing — `list_calculators` then `calculate`; every result carries its tax year, cited sources and verification claim. - [Compute by URL](https://valem.run/calculators/germany/net-salary.json?grossAnnual=48000): any calculator's `.json` URL with its inputs as query parameters returns the computed result; with no parameters it returns the model manifest. - [Calculator catalog](https://valem.run/calculators/catalog.json): every calculator id; add `?country=estonia` for each one's inputs. - [OpenAPI](https://valem.run/openapi.json): the compute-by-URL and catalog operations, for HTTP tools and GPT actions. ## Optional - [llms-full.txt](https://valem.run/llms-full.txt): every calculator page and research article as Markdown in one file; each page is also at its URL plus `.md`. - [Examples gallery](https://valem.run/docs/usage-scenarios/examples-gallery.html): ready-to-run ModelSpec documents that double as demos and starting points. - [API reference](https://valem.run/docs/reference/api-reference.html): REST endpoints, the WebSocket protocol, and request/response shapes. - [Source on GitHub](https://github.com/vlad-public-code/org.json-kula.valem): Apache-2.0, Java 21. ## Live calculators - [All calculators](https://valem.run/calculators): interactive, verifiable tax and cost calculators by country — fork or embed any of them. - Every calculator below also publishes its model as JSON at the same URL with a `.json` suffix (e.g. https://valem.run/calculators/germany/net-salary.json): inputs, outputs, the formula behind each derived value, the engine-verified test vectors, the official sources with the date each was checked, and an explicit statement of what the verification does and does not claim. - The same evidence in readable form lives at `/verify` under each page (e.g. https://valem.run/calculators/germany/net-salary/verify). - [Self-employment calculators for every modelled country](https://valem.run/calculators/self-employed): net income under the named regime each country puts self-employed people in — Freiberufler, MEI, FIE, Monotributo and the rest — including the flat-rate options and the turnover thresholds that end them. - [Take-home pay across every country, ranked](https://valem.run/calculators/compare/net-salary): what share of gross salary you keep in each modelled country, computed by running all of them; currency-free by design. - These models are published under CC BY 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) — quotable and reusable with attribution to the page each came from.
