# Motorrijtuigenbelasting — Netherlands road tax

Source page: https://valem.run/calculators/netherlands/car-tax

Dutch road tax (motorrijtuigenbelasting) depends on the car's weight and fuel, with diesels paying much more and electric cars getting a discount.

**Tax year:** 2026

## How it is calculated

The MRB is the Netherlands' recurring road tax, billed quarterly and driven mainly by the car's weight and fuel type. Diesel cars pay several times the petrol rate for the same weight; electric cars get a reduced rate.

Provinces add their own surcharge (opcenten) on top, so the exact amount varies by where the car is registered. Since 1 July 2026 the weight used is the massa rijklaar, 100 kg more than the old massa ledig voertuig. The calculator takes weight and fuel and returns an illustrative annual figure. Estimate, not tax advice.

## Worked example

With Gewicht of 1,100, this model computes MRB per jaar of 264 EUR.
