# First Registration Tax Calculator Hong Kong 2026 — FRT & licence

Source page: https://valem.run/calculators/hong-kong/car-tax

A private car in Hong Kong pays first registration tax on its taxable value at 46% on the first $150,000, 86% on the next $150,000, 115% on the next $200,000 and 132% above $500,000, then an annual licence fee set by engine size — or, for an electric car, by rated power.

**Tax year:** 2026

## How it is calculated

First registration tax is the big number. It is charged once, on the car’s **taxable value**, across four bands: **46%** on the first $150,000, **86%** on the next $150,000, **115%** on the next $200,000 and **132%** on the remainder. A $250,000 car pays $155,000 of FRT; above $500,000 each extra dollar of value costs $1.32.

**Electric cars no longer get a discount.** The FRT concessions for electric private cars, including the One-for-One Replacement Scheme, were not extended past 31 March 2026. An electric car registered on an application from 1 April 2026 pays the same schedule as a petrol one — a $300,000 EV now carries $198,000 of FRT — unless it was ordered by 25 February 2026 under the one-off transitional arrangement.

The **annual licence fee** is the recurring cost. Petrol and diesel cars are banded by cylinder capacity, from $5,074 (petrol, up to 1,500 cc) to $16,592 (diesel, over 4,500 cc); electric cars by rated power, from $1,614 (up to 75 kW) to $5,114 (over 225 kW) under the structure applying to licences from March 2026. The fee includes the Traffic Accident Victims Assistance levy.

## Worked example
