# Kfz-Steuer Rechner — Germany car tax

German annual car tax is a displacement charge per started 100 cm³ (€2 petrol, €9.50 diesel) plus a stepped CO₂ charge on every gram above 95 g/km.

## How it is calculated

For a car first registered from 1 January 2021, Germany's annual Kfz-Steuer has two parts. The displacement part charges 2.00 EUR per started 100 cm³ for a petrol engine, or 9.50 EUR for a diesel — so a 1,398 cm³ petrol counts as 14 units.

The CO₂ part applies only above 95 g/km, and it is stepped: 2.00 EUR per gram from 96-115, rising through 2.20, 2.50, 2.90 and 3.40 to 4.00 EUR per gram above 195. Each band charges only the grams that fall inside it. (Cars first registered between July 2009 and 2020 pay a flat 2.00 EUR per gram above 95 instead — this model does not cover them.)

Add the two parts for the annual tax. Battery-electric cars registered in time are exempt for several years. The calculator exposes displacement, CO₂ and fuel type because all three move the result. Estimate, not tax advice.
