# Coût carte grise — France registration cost

Source page: https://valem.run/calculators/france/car-tax

France has no annual car ownership tax; the cost people pay is the carte grise — the regional tax per fiscal horsepower plus fixed fees.

**Tax year:** 2026

## How it is calculated

Unlike most of Europe, France levies no recurring annual tax on privately owned cars. The cost drivers search for is the carte grise (registration certificate), paid once when a vehicle changes hands.

Its main component is a regional tax: the number of fiscal horsepower (chevaux fiscaux) times a per-CV rate set by each region, plus small fixed management and delivery fees. Pick your region from the dropdown — in 2026 the rate runs from 43.00 EUR/CV in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes to 68.95 in Île-de-France, which adds a 14 EUR levy for Île-de-France Mobilités. High-emitting new cars also pay a one-off CO2 malus at purchase. Estimate, not tax advice.

## Worked example

With Puissance fiscale of 5, this model computes Coût carte grise of 268.76 EUR.
