Under section 117 of the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006, a worker who has completed one year of continuous service earns paid annual leave of one day for every 18 days worked in the previous twelve months in a shop, commercial or industrial establishment, factory or road transport — one per 22 days in a tea garden and one per 11 days for a newspaper worker — and an adolescent earns one per 14 days (18 in a tea garden).

**Tax year:** 2026

## How it is calculated

Section 117(1) of the **Bangladesh Labour Act 2006**: every adult worker who has completed one year of continuous service in an establishment gets, in the next twelve months, leave with wages for the previous twelve months’ work at **one day for every eighteen days of work** in a shop, commercial or industrial establishment, factory or road transport establishment, **one per twenty-two** in a tea garden and **one per eleven** for a newspaper worker. Section 117(2) gives an adolescent worker (14 to 18) **one per fourteen** days in a factory, shop, commercial or industrial establishment and **one per eighteen** in a tea garden.

So **288 days** of work in a shop or factory earn **16 days**; the page counts whole days only. Unused leave carries forward until an adult has 40 days (factory, road transport) or 60 (tea garden, shop, commercial or industrial establishment) — 60 or 80 for an adolescent — and leave the employer refuses is added beyond that limit. Holidays, paid leave, sickness, maternity leave of up to 120 days, lay-off and lawful strikes do not break continuous service (s.117(8), as amended by the Bangladesh Labour (Amendment) Act 2026).

The Act covers “workers” (s.2(65)), not staff put in charge of management, administration or supervision in writing, and EPZ workers have their own law. Section 117(2) states no rate for adolescents in road transport or newspapers, so the page applies the adult rate there (road transport is its own option). Casual leave (s.115), sick leave (s.116) and festival leave (s.118) are separate.
