# Car Registration Cost — Australia (rego)

Source page: https://valem.run/calculators/australia/car-tax

Australian rego is a base fee plus a tare-weight motor-vehicle tax plus compulsory third-party insurance (CTP).

**Tax year:** 2025

> **Not yet updated for the current tax year.** This page shows the shape of the registration cost with illustrative rates; the official 2026 schedule has not been checked. Confirm the amount with your state or territory road authority.

## How it is calculated

Australia has no CO2 car tax; the recurring cost is annual registration (rego). It combines a base fee, a motor-vehicle tax that rises with tare weight, and compulsory third-party insurance (CTP).

Rates and CTP differ between NSW, Victoria, Queensland and other states. The calculator uses an illustrative NSW-style structure. Estimate, not advice.

## Worked example

With Tare weight of 1,400, this model computes Annual rego of 1,025 AUD.

## What this page claims

The Valem engine reproduces this model's formula through 2 self-test cases. That shows internal consistency, not that the formula matches current law; the cited sources are the evidence for that. Estimate, not tax advice.
